The Ukrainian president says pro-Russian forces have freed 12,000 - TopicsExpress

The Ukrainian president says pro-Russian forces have freed 12,000 people taken hostage during the five-month deadly conflict in the countrys east. Petro Poroshenko made the remark during a visit to the flash point city of Mariupol in the southeast. His visit came as a shaky ceasefire appears to be holding in much of Ukraine’s east. Poroshenko said the people, whom he referred to as prisoners, were freed over the past four days. The release is part of a truce deal hammered out between the government and pro-Russian militias on Friday. The uneasy truce was thrown into peril over the weekend by the shelling of Mariupol and fighting near the city of Donetsk. A previous temporary ceasefire in June was riddled by reports of violations on both sides.
