The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization has praised Costa Rica as “a global example in forest protection policies.” Costa Rica has been commended for its reforestation programme which has, over 30 years, reversed a history of deforestation. The area of forest in Costa Rica has now reached 50% of the territory. The South American continent suffers the highest rate of deforestation in the world, making the work undertaken in Costa Rica even more remarkable.
