The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) threatened to impose sanctions on the warring sides in South Sudan if the crisis in the African country continues. In a statement released on Monday, the UNSC said it will consider all appropriate measures, including targeted sanctions against those impeding the peace process in South Sudan, press tv reported. The statement also blamed South Sudans man-made, political, security and humanitarian catastrophe as well as the threat of famine on the sides to the conflict in the country. South Sudan plunged into violence in December 2013 when fighting erupted around the capital, Juba, between troops loyal to the country’s President Salva Kiir and defectors led by his former deputy Riek Machar. The statement called on Kiir, Machar and all parties to refrain from further violence, implement the Agreement to Resolve the Crisis in South Sudan signed on May 9, 2014, (and) uphold their commitment to establish a Transitional Government of National Unity.
