The United Nations has adopted a resolution, urging Israel to pay Lebanon in excess of USD 850 million for causing an “environmental disaster. The UN General Assembly approved the non-binding resolution overwhelmingly on Friday. As many as 170 countries voted in favor of the resolution, six countries said no and three abstained. Tel Aviv is obliged to pay the amount for an oil spill the regime caused in July 2006 during its war on Lebanon. Israeli warplanes attacked Lebanon’s oil storage tanks during the war which led to extensive pollution that covered the entire Lebanese coastline and was extended to the Syrian coastline. Tel Aviv launched wars on Lebanon in 2000 and 2006. About 1,200 Lebanese, most of them civilians, were killed in the 33-Day War of 2006. On both wars, however, the Lebanese resistance movement Hezbollah defeated the Israeli military and Tel Aviv was forced to retreat without achieving any of its objectives.
