The University itself will no doubt have many reasons to enjoy its early Christmas present with these results. However, I would suggest that digging beneath the veneer reveals a victory which I know many academics themselves consider to be superficial, given the high demands that are placed on them. While I am not by any means diminishing the quality of research produced at Warwick, it is worth bearing in mind that this might not be the gift its students want if the University doesn’t start thinking seriously about teaching as a priority rather than an add-on. For students here, the question they may ultimately be left with is: what good is the University’s standing when the actual education they receive is being eroded by processes designed largely to increase that reputation? SU President Cat Turhan blogs on the results of the recent REF (Research Excellence Framework), and outlines their potential consequences for all Warwick students: warwicksu/blogs/blog/catturhan/2014/12/22/REF-EREEEEEE-What-the-REF-is-what-it-means-for-Warwick-and-what-it-means-for-you/
