The University of Hawai`i at Hilo invites the public to the opening of Re-imagining Paper and Fiber at the Wailoa Arts and Cultural Center on Monday, July 7 with a holiday delayed First Friday public reception on Friday July 11, from 5-7 pm. The international invitational show, organized by the UH Hilo Art Department as a community outreach presentation in conjunction with the Summer Art Institute Hilo program, includes works by Brett Alexander (Australia), Sasha Duerr (California), Melanie Yazzie (Colorado), Mariana Acosta (Mexico), Maile Andrade, Mary Babcock, Pam Barton, Liv Johnson, Ian Kuali`i, Marques Hanalei Marzan, and Jared Yamanuha (Hawai`i), Paul Catanese and Melissa Potter (Illinois), Sandria Hu (Texas), Khalid Kodi (Massachusetts), Amy Jacobs and Paul Wong (New York), Chakaia Booker (New Jersey), Robin Johnson and Rachel Meginnes (North Carolina), Makar Robert (Slovakia), Faamoemoe Iuali (Samoa), Biljana Vukovic (Serbia), and Rina Yoon (Wisconsin). The Center will also concurrently feature in the Wailoa Fountain Gallery a solo exhibition by UH Hilo Art Department Summer Art Institute Visiting Artist John Hitchcock. Hitchcock will be in- residence from the University of Wisconsin-Madison where he teaches screen printing, relief cut, and installation art to explore relationships of community, land, and culture. His awards include The Robert Rauschenberg Foundation Artistic Innovation and Collaboration grant, New York, Jerome Foundation Grant, Minnesota, and a Creative Arts Award from the University of Wisconsin. The exhibitions will remain on view through Thursday, July 24, 2014.
