The V2 heavy site at Watten in the Pas de Calais. Code-named by the Nazis Kraftwerk Nord West (Powerplant Northwest). British photo reconnaissance with their Spitfires and Mosquitos armed not with guns but with cameras kept a close and constant eye on its construction. To the extent that Sir Robert McAlpine was able as a consultant to advise the Crossbow Committee on juuuust the right time to bomb. When the concrete was not too wet, not too dry, but just semi-set at a stage where allied bombing would smash hell out of the bloody thing and render it completely inoperable and beyond repair. Which allied bombing successfully did, thank God! Used later by the USAF for target practice. Now a fabulous museum for those who fancy a 30 minute drive from Calais.
