The Vaganova Method: no, its not a spy-thriller set in St. Petersburg, but one of the ballet worlds most widely-used approaches to training a classical dancer. In Manhattan Beach, Brooklyn, Brighton Ballet Theater (The School of Russian American Ballet) has been putting kids in tutus and tights through their paces for 27 years. The Vaganova method is a ballet technique and training system devised by the Russian dancer and pedagogue Agrippina Vaganova (1879–1951). The technique fuses elements of traditional French technique from the romantic era with the athleticism and virtuosity of Italian technique. The training system is designed to involve the whole body in every movement, with equal attention paid to the upper body, legs and feet. Vaganova believed that this approach increases consciousness of the body, thus creating a harmony of movement and greater expressive range. The Vaganova Academy of Russian Ballet is a school of classical ballet in Saint Petersburg, Russia. The Vaganova Ballet Academy which some consider the source of modern classical dance (Russian Ballet technique) is now over 275 years old. About BBT | The School of Russian American Ballet The School of Russian American Ballet was established in 1987 as a not-for profit organization and held its first class with just five students in a tiny studio. Oh, how times have changed since then. Today, the Brooklyn-based ballet center–located on the campus of Kingsborough Community College–employs teachers trained in the famed Vaganova Methods. Teachers passionately share their knowledge and talents with beginners as well as advanced dancers of all ages and backgrounds, and give students an opportunity to perform full-scale ballets with costumes and scenery.
