The Vampire Diaries Season 5 Speculation: Can Matt Stay Human? After four years of snapped necks, drownings, suffocations, and general murder, there are very few Vampire Diaries humans left, well, human. Matt Donovan (Zach Roerig), the high school quarterback and blue-eyed busboy, lost his sister, girlfriend, and even ex-girlfriend to vampirism. Then he lost his best friends to everything from magic to a hunter’s mark and a werewolf curse. Now, Matt serves as the show’s sometimes blood bag, sometimes errand boy, and all-the-time foundation of humanity. But five years into the series, can Matt really continue to stay human in this world of always evolving supernatural villains? Should he? It’s true that a trustworthy human is nice to have around. How else would Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Damon (Ian Somerhalder) have gotten Elena (Nina Dobrev) to turn her humanity back on if it weren’t for their staged sacrifice of her one-time crib buddy? And then if we think back to Elena’s transition, Matt did save her from killing a lot of innocent people, albeit temporarily. So yes, being human does have its benefits (mostly for others). When Season 5 kicks off, Matt will have traveled the world with Rebekah (Claire Holt), an Original vampire. After that experience, will he still want to see the world from a mortal’s shoes? Given how much Rebekah misses her humanity, there’s a likely chance that he will want to remain Mystic Fall’s only human now more than ever. But let’s face it, Matt being human puts him in a lot of danger. Even Elena almost killed him back when he was her human blood bag. And he isn’t always useful. Some can argue that Elena’s transformation was the fault of humans trying to “save the day” when Jeremy and Matt decided to get Elena out of town. But regardless, how much longer can Matt survive as a human? Or do you think that his humanity is what has kept him alive all this time? Those pretty blue eyes aren’t enough anymore.
