The Vice Chancellor, Through The Dean, Students’ Affair - TopicsExpress

The Vice Chancellor, Through The Dean, Students’ Affair Department. Dear Sir, SAVE STUDENTS’ UNION GOVRENMENT OF OUR UNIVERSITY BEFORE IT BECOMES TOO LATE It is with profound sense of humility and respect that i wish to register my grief and disappointment on behalf of the Students Judicial Council of the SUG of our noble Institution. An adage said that an elder cannot fold his hands while a goat delivers in tethers. Sir in as much the business of the Judiciary begins and ends with the interpretation of the laws, it, however, as the custodian of the constitution of the Students. We cannot fold our hands and watch while impunity and lawlessness will take over the running of the Union. It is high time when things should be done in a right way so as to give room for equity and justice. Mr Vice Chancellor, on 24th of November 2014 i went to the Students Affairs Department on behalf of SJC, for the application we made particularly for the release of fund for our upcoming programme, THE JUDICIARY WEEK coming up from 5th to 10th December. Our most respectable Dean Students Affairs drew my attention to what can best be described as a shrouded abracadabra Budget of the Union for 2013/2014, which was brought, drafted, signed and passed into law by the Presidents and the Secretary of the union. I was shocked and felt bad upon seeing the budget. Does it mean that the union has been turned into an autocratic government? Where the whims and caprices of the emperor replace the principle of democracy and rule of law? It is a well known fact that under the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria, which is the grundnorm of land, and in tandem with the SUG Constitution, the Legislative body is empowered to pass the budget into law. But in our own case His Excellency and the Secretary General of the Union as can be seen from the signatories, hijacked the budget of the three arms of government, drafted both the budget of the Executive, Judiciary and Legislatures by themselves and even impersonated the speaker, thereby allocating the sum of One Hundred Thousand Naira (100,000) each to the two arms and ended up allocating One Million, Nine Hundred Thousand Naira Plus to the Executive. It pains us that the school went ahead and approved the budget without taking a cursory look sat this illegality. Our Dear Vice Chancellor, it is with profound sense of humility that this action of the President and the Secretary General is not only inequitable, unconstitutional and unjustifiable but also criminal and fraudulently done. Sir if you go on to allow this impunity to go on in this union then is simply means that the union is sitting on a keg of gun powder which will soon explode, sir may we state that if the centre can no longer hold prophetically, one day things will fall apart. This impunity should be put to a stop, the power and recklessness and break down of law and order in this union should urgently be stopped. The Injustice is quite alarming because the JUDICIARY is now looking helpless because of starvation of fund to carry out their programmes and agendas for the Students in line with our policy of transformation. A good example again is the previous MOU signed by the three arms which the Presidency is still finding it hard to fully implement. In conclusion Sir, we commend Prof Ken Nwogu, as Professor of laws and our dean remain vigilant and resolute in discharging his duty and also make sure that things should be done in open and transparent manner. We believe that no human is a saint but Impunity and recklessness should not be the order of the day. The system needs a serious reformation and the presidency should be call to order if not, then there is no need of establishing the Legislative arm of government or even the Judiciary. Finally we pray you, sir, to amongst other things, call the president and his secretary to order and to, in your capacity as the vice chancellor, reverse their action so that the due process will be followed. I believe that Justice should not only be done both seen to have been manifestly done. Thank You. Signed…………………...............................
