The Vice Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University, Lt. Gen. (Retd.) Zameer Uddin Shah inaugurated the “AMU Cycle Mart”, a unique initiative, at Raza Lodge, opposite Sir Sulaiman Hall Gate, Anoopshahar Road, Aligarh, towards achieving the target of a green and clean campus. The Pedal Green AMU Bicycle Studio is a joint venture with Hero Cycles Ltd., which would provide bicycles to the students, faculty members and non-teaching staff at a concessional price with stickers reading ‘Pedal Green AMU’. The University has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Hero Cycles for five years. The initiative aimed at increasing the use of bicycles for commuting within the university, promises not just a pollution free environment but also a healthier lifestyle. Addressing the inaugural ceremony, the Vice Chancellor, Lt Gen Shah said that with the opening of this mart, his dream has come true that AMU becomes sensitive towards the green environment like universities in Europe and America. He said that this mart would help promote a cycle culture in AMU and students and teachers will prefer cycles for daily commuting. He wished AMU students got cycles in concessional rates from this shop and his objective was fulfilled. He thanked the Hero Cycles. Expressing his views on the occasion, the Project Manager of Hero Cycles, Mr. Gopal Krishna said that it is a right decision in right direction and other universities in India will also promote use of cycle in their campuses to make it greener and cleaner. On this occasion, AMU Pro-Vice Chancellor, Brigadier (Retd.) S. Ahmad Ali, DSW Prof. Anis Ismail and Provosts of residential halls were present. Dr. S. Khurram Nisar of Department of Physical Health and Sports Education conducted the programme. AMU alumnus Mr. Husain Bilgirami played an important role in opening the mart.
