The Voice- Grace: Filling the Gap between who you are, and where you are! Person A: So God created grace because he knew I would mess up? Person B: Yes Person A: So I guess with grace as a safety net, I can do whatever I like? Person B: Well I suppose you could but would that really be honouring the gift? Person A: So what am I supposed to do then, if I know I will mess up Person B: Live a life that walks in tune with the Holy Spirit, its like a still small voice that came alongside you when you said you believed, and acts like a counsellor to lead and guide you into what is best for you. One of the great dilemmas when explaining grace is that it almost sounds as though grace means that you can do whatever you like in the knowledge that the grace ‘safety net’ is there to catch all flaws. This is not incorrect but it is incomplete. If you know to good, and don’t do it, you are missing the mark or what I like to class as ‘God’s best for you’ The law which came before grace was designed to provide us with boundaries, or an awareness of sin, in exactly the same way the motoring laws in our country dictate that the national speed limit on our motorway is 70mph. Even though we are aware of it, the speed limit still gets broken. If you contrast that with the autobahn in Germany, there is no speed limit. Lets just imagine that you and I were driving down the autobahn at a comfortable speed and I suggested that you go faster, there is no restriction so you may well take the hint. 80, 90, 100 miles per hour, dependent on your comfort zone you may well push the boat out, but at a certain point and internal signal will go off that will say to you, this may be hazardous, and this warning provides you with the opportunity to slow down. What I have just explained is the autobahn of Grace and internal voice of the holy spirit! Grace does mean freedom, but it was never designed as an excuse to live without conscience. Too often when we are trying to help one another, we speak in the language of right and wrong, as opposed to asking ‘is that God’s best?’ I believe that a creator as awesome as God, was able to place his best inside our hearts, it is up to us to become attuned to his voice and learn to follow his best for us.
