The Voice of Love October 21 And if the sinner asks for proof, at once I would say “Haven’t you felt the strivings and drawings of His love in your heart? Haven’t you known moments of holy longing and of bitter grief at your failures? Haven’t you had “heavenly visions” come to you sometimes when God gave you a glimpse of what a life with Him might be? These were the Spirit’s work, and are the voice of love and yearning from the Shepherd who is seeking to save you. Yield to these, and let Him save you.” He believes, he yields, he turns, he trusts, he begins to follow. In this approach, the moment of conversion may be definite as definite as in any other conversion. I believe just as definite work may be done on this plan as on any other, and that it will be far more real, and unspeakably more God-honoring. And as to character, it makes the grandest sort of Christlikeness. Of course God meets people on other planes if that is the best they know, and does all He can for them with such false views of Himself, but oh! how unspeakably thankful I am to have grown out of it. I wish I had time to write to Joel and tell him how much I enjoyed his views. I entirely agree with him as to the superficiality of much of religion. It cannot very well be any thing but superficial, if it is a correct doctrinal belief and not a regenerated life that is the point aimed at, and considered of the first importance. My soul hungers for realities. For the “kingdom of God is not in word but in power.”
