The Voyager 1 spacecraft left the solar system today. It was launched in 1977, studied the outer planets and then continued towards outer space. It is now 12 billion miles from home (12,000,000,000!) and incredibly it is still communicating with earth. The radio signal, which travels at the speed of light, takes 17 hours to reach us. It has finally escaped the influence of the sun and has become the first object from earth to move in to interstellar space. Amazing.
