The Walkley Foundation today announced the shortlist for the Walkley Book Award, part of Australia’s most prestigious accolades across print, radio, television, photography and publishing. More than 70 books were entered into the book award category of the Walkley Awards for Excellence in Journalism this year, with subject matter ranging from true crime, politics and war to biography and investigative journalism. The 2014 Walkley Book Award shortlisted finalists announced today in Sydney include (in alphabetical order): Rafael Epstein, Prisoner X, Melbourne University Press Paul Kelly, Triumph and Demise: The Broken Promise of a Labor Generation, Melbourne University Press David Marr, The Prince: Faith, Abuse and George Pell, Black Inc. Chair of the Walkley Book Award Malcolm Farr said increasingly, journalists were refusing to be tethered to their usual newspaper and magazine outlets and were instead filling the pages of books and creating a valuable and growing class of Australian literature. “The quality of this output improves as the numbers grow, a measure of the skill and dedication of the reporters who can turn a news story into a compelling non-fiction expansion,” “Congratulations and best wishes to all the finalists. In fact, to all the journalists who stepped outside their usual work spaces to help Australians become better informed through books,” he said. The judging panel for the 2014 book awards included: Malcolm Farr, chief political writer, news.au John Harrison, senior lecturer in journalism and communication, The University of Queensland Sophie Hamley, literary agent, The Cameron Creswell Agency Chris Masters, journalist and author Susan Johnson, journalist and author Richard Guilliatt, staff writer, The Weekend Australian Magazine Debbie Cuthbertson, arts editor, The Age Jim Waley, senior journalist Colleen Ryan, journalist and author Quentin Dempster, presenter 7.30 NSW, ABC TV , Walkley Advisory Board Chair The winner of the 2014 Walkley Book Award will be announced at the 59th Walkley Awards for Excellence in Journalism on Thursday December 4 in Sydney.
