The Waterville Police are investigating the stabbing of a 24-year-old man which occurred last night in the City’s south end. On 07-28-14 at approximately 9PM, the Waterville Police responded to Carey Lane near the intersection of Water Street for a report of a person who had been stabbed. When officers arrived on scene, they located a 24-year-old Waterville resident who was suffering from a stab wound to his abdomen. The man was transported by Delta Ambulance to Inland Hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery for his critical injury. Throughout the night, members of the Detective Division worked to piece together the details of what led to the stabbing. Although the victim is uncooperative and refuses to speak with investigators, police are confident that the stabbing was not a random act. “It appears that the victim and several other males went to a residence on Carey Lane to confront another male over a personal dispute between the victim and the suspect. A fight broke out and during the fight, our victim was struck on the head and stabbed,” according to Police Chief Joseph Massey. The investigator’s work was complicated by more than the frustrating lack of cooperation they received from the victim and other witnesses. Shortly after they arrived on scene to begin the process of securing the area and searching for evidence, a powerful thunderstorm hit the area which resulted in heavy rain and lightning. Although the suspected weapon and several other pieces of evidence were recovered, other evidence such as blood trails were washed away. Police are not releasing the identity of the victim and at this time are not identifying the suspect of the stabbing. Chief Massey explained, “We have no reason to believe the public is in any danger from the suspect. We know who he is and we are seeking to locate him to learn his side of the story. If an arrest is made in this case, we will release additional information at that time.” The lead investigator in the case is Detective Joshua Woods. Any person with information relevant to the case is asked to call the Police Department’s business line at 207-680-4700. The Waterville Police Department is located at 10 Colby Street. The Department is comprised of 31 sworn law enforcement officers, 8 dispatchers and two civilian employees who provide law enforcement services to the City of Watervilles 16,000 residents. The City of Waterville is 14 square miles and is a service center to central Maine, featuring two college campuses, two hospitals, and numerous shopping areas.
