The Waynesville Police Department would like to wish our first and only explosives-detecting K9 officer, Levi, a very happy retirement. Levi will retire at the end of this month with 8 years of service to the Waynesville Police Department. (Thats 56 years in dog years!!) Levi is a German Shepherd. He was raised and trained by Lazaro Cabrera of Police Service Dogs. He has been with the Waynesville Police Department since 2007. He was certified through the US Police Canine Association for explosives detection in April 2009. Levi is currently certified by USPCA in explosives detection and tracking. Levi and Heath have responded to many locations in WNC in reference to suspected explosives or bomb threats. They have also been requested to assist by the secret service for dignitary detail during the presidential campaigns and other dignitary visits to the area. Levi is credited with saving the life of an elderly man who had left his home and was lost in the woods overnight. The man was trapped in briars and unable to move and too weak to call for help. Levi was deployed and after a very short time recognized the man’s scent and led officers and rescue personnel to him. The man was in very serious condition but due to Levi and Heath’s actions his life was saved. Congratulations Levi! Happy Retirement.
