The Week that went 2nd June 2013 Well the Thursday curse hit with a vengeance this week. As an opener, I will say that I am one of those really lucky people who seemed to be blessed with very good health. I never get sick, no colds, no flu, no illness at all, well apart from osteo arthritis and the occasional migraine headache. Even as a child I was full of good health, a rather obscure claim to fame that I have, is that I never missed a single day of primary school (and I still have the certificates to prove that is so). I did get chicken pox when I was 13, which spoilt my attendance record in High school, but that was it. To my shame, I have to admit that because I have never been really sick, I cannot (could not) fully empathise with those who are, but I sure can now. Wednesday night my stomach felt queasy, by 1.00am Thursday I knew it was more than queasiness and suffice to say for the next 12 hours, I became on very intimate terms with the toilet bowl and a bucket and then whilst the vomiting subsided the other end didn’t. I have now learnt that vomiting is a form of torture, it is cruel an unnecessary torture in an extreme form. Food has a designated path through your body, coming back out the way it went in, is just not on, neither is the extreme racking of the torso muscles to the point of being unbearable, where every movement of said body sends searing pain signals to the brain. In a moment between bouts, I did get to marvel at how much a body can expel, just when it seems there is nothing left, it does find more. Sort of like our poodle, Fred, who is a piddling Pete, you can take him on an all day walk, past a million trees and he can manage to piddle on each an every one of them, where it comes from I do not know, because he never runs out, well so it seems and neither did my bile. I, who think time spent in bed is wasting away my life, spent the next 4 days in bed, well I was in bed in between getting exercise, running to and from the ensuite. (and believe me, I was run ragged) My very own personal Angel of Mercy, aka Nurse Bob, was there for me (as ever) , giving me tablets, horrible medicine and drinks containing electrolytes, If I hadn’t been so bloody sick, I may have enjoyed the pampering. :-) Truthfully I don’t know how he did it, I didn’t make a model patient, I suspect he was quite glad that he had to go to work, I’m sure my yodelling was not of the same calibre as that of Mary Schneider and my constant whining even annoyed me. Anyway come Sunday night I realised I was going to survive, all symptoms disappeared and I returned to being my sunny old self, albeit I lost 4 days of my life, turned Bob into a nurse extraordinaire and am now left to ponder the miracle that is a human body and what it can go through. ;-)
