The Weekly Dirt Sourwood- Oxydendron arboreum Few trees are as stunning in their fall splendor as the Sourwood- Oxydendron arboreum. As well as striking fall color the tree’s yellow flower panicles add an additional layer of intense color. This particular tree stands inconspicuously tucked into a corner on the south side of the Key Arena until fall when it makes its presense unmistakably known. The arboreum is the lone species of the genus Oxydendron and grows in forested regions of its native range in the south eastern United States and is important in honey production there. Although we don’t see this tree a lot in this area it can be an great addition to gardens here if the right cultural conditions are taken into account.
