The Westchester Society of the Archaeological Institute of America is pleased to present the following lecture about the War of 1812: The Search for Chaunceys Fleet in Lake Ontario Date: January 25 Time: 2:00 Location: Scarsdale Library, 54 Olmsted Road, Scarsdale scarsdalelibrary.org/about/directions/ Speaker: Ben Ford, Indiana University of Pennsylvania During the past four years, an interdisciplinary team of archaeologists and geologists have investigated portions of the Black River Bay, Lake Ontario, with a variety of techniques including side-scan sonar, sub-bottom profiling, magnetometry, and through-ice ground penetrating radar. While the primary focus of this work is War of 1812 shipwrecks, the investigations have expanded to include questions focused on geologic and anthropogenic environmental processes. The objectives, methods, and results will be summarized, and the benefits of integrating geology and archaeology in similar submerged investigations will be discussed. Ben Ford, Department of Anthropology, Indiana University of Pennsylvania, completed his dissertation on Lake Ontario Maritime Cultural Landscape at Texas A&M. His focus has been on Lake Ontario and he is the co-editor of the Oxford Handbook of Maritime Archaeology.
