The Western cultural conception of ayahuasca is totally skewed - TopicsExpress

The Western cultural conception of ayahuasca is totally skewed from its actual effects. Thinking of it as a medicine which heals is all Gringo bullshit talk, which native Amazonians are more than happy to sell back to us, using whatever New Age buzz words our benjamins demand. We must throw out this cultural baggage, and study the actuality of the DMTs effect on the body and perceptual systems, and the subtle influences that govern that hypersensitive state, and how many of those factors can be isolated or controlled. Only with those fresh eyes can we begin to form a protocol for effective and clinical use. Ayahuasca does not heal, but is one (of many) tools which can be utilized in healing certain conditions. Dramatization, hyperbole, and romanticization of the effects only cloud our effective use. As great as the mysticism and anecdotes are to read, if we are to move forward and take clinical use of the medicine seriously, we will need to study it with clear eyes, free of either Western or Southern cultural blind spots, biases, and prejudices.
