The White House yet again has displayed mind numbing insensitivity and colossal ignorance in dealing with Israel. According to White House press secretary Josh Earnest, the US condemns the “occupation of residential buildings in the Palestinian neighborhood of Silwan in east Jerusalem -- this is near the old city -- by individuals who are associated with an organization whose agenda, by definition, stokes tensions between Israelis and Palestinians.” The organization that purchased the small number of houses and rents them to Jewish tenants is Elad, which also administers the City of David National Park. The park is an historical site visited by half a million people yearly, which is as important to Jewish history as the Al Aqsa Mosque is to Muslim history. Yet, while Muslims are commonly conceded the privilege of living nearby their religious sites, the White House would deny this same privilege to Israeli Jews, in spite of the fact that the transaction was entirely legal and involved substantial consideration to the private former Palestinian owners.
