The Who - Whos Next (1971 Decca Records). I know Ive posted this before. That one was a W1 (west coast pressing) that was fairly beat up. This is a W2 (which I believe was an east coast pressing), in really nice shape. But the vinyl is a bit noisy. And it still sounds good, but its almost like each song was mastered by a different person. Baba OReilly is a little too comressed, while Bargain is very punchy and dynamic. This album remains an enigma to me. Guess I just wont find a nice original of this. The MCA reissues from the 70s to 80s are very thin sounding, the first CD remaster in 95 used a dub of the master tape, the Deluxe edition CD that came out in 03 used the original tapes, but was compressed to hell. The original CD from 1984 is the best digital version of this, but try finding one. All the early MCA CDs used the same catalogue number, so you have to look at the code printed on the inner ring of the CD to identify the right pressing. One thing I find funny, is on all the versions Ive heard, Love Aint For Keepin always sounds fantastic. Its like its the only song they could get just right. My Wife actually sounds really good on this one, not quite as compressed. (I know this album inside out, what each note should sound like, this is one of my reference records). Whatever you do, stay away from the recent Geffen Records released version of this. Sounds terrible. Noisy vinyl and no dynamics. Also the Capitol record club version from the 70s is dreadful.
