The Wilshire Links opened on August 29, 1930, and stayed open for a decade (more or less), closing with the decline in mini-golf’s popularity. The Wilshire Links was owned by Mary Pickford. It stood at Wilshire and La Cienega under a canopy of stylized palm trees and as we can see by this photo, it was an Art Deco paradise. Pickford owned the property and with the miniature golf craze in full swing, she hired artisans from the United Artist Studio to build a course in a “French modernistic style.” It featured imiatation palms, a lake and wandering streams as well as lighting effects. It is believed that Pickford might have built it out of rebellion. In the late 1920s and well into the 1930s, studio bosses (like Louis B. Mayer) refused to allow their contract stars to play or be seen at a miniature golf. “The movie studios feared the soaring popularity of mini-golf would diminish theater ticket sales. That’s why in movies of that era, you rarely see someone playing mini-golf, despite the fact the courses were everywhere in Hollywood.” TMI?
