The Wind, my Advocate and Adversary As someone who rides his bicycle on a regular basis, I face unfavorable conditions such as rain or snow. I bike home during the night, sometimes past midnight, but I always have my front and rear flashlights with me. I have my red raincoat with me at all times. Rain and snow are always adversaries but the wind can alternate roles! When the wind blows in the direction opposite of motion, it always makes me think of the simple physics problems I did back in boarding school. The problem would often involve an object moving under the influence of a certain tractive force but going against air resistance. When the wind blows on the side, as in perpendicular to the direction of motion, it feels like it is trying to lift me up like Mary Poppins! I still remember reading the book and watching the movie almost 20 years ago. I can’t imagine what condition I would be in if the wind was indeed that powerful! This also makes me think of “At the Back of the North Wind” by George MacDonald. What a coincidence! I am in the northwestern United States and have to tolerate the north wind! Lastly, the wind is my advocate every time it pushes me from the rear end of my bicycle. All of a sudden, the wind has given me more motivation to keep pedaling. Once I change my direction of motion, the wind will switch its role.
