The Women Of The Supreme Court Now Have The Badass Portrait They Deserve The Huffington Post | By Mollie Reilly 10/28/2013 8:34 pm EDT | Updated: 10/29/2013 11:58 am EDT [Pictured: Female Supreme Court Justices Come Together For Fabulous Portrait] The women of the Supreme Court are the subjects of a new painting unveiled at the Smithsonians National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C. on Monday. The portrait features the high courts current female justices, Sonia Sotomayor, Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Elena Kagan, as well as Sandra Day OConnor, who retired from the bench in 2005. OConnor made history in 1981 when she became the first woman ever named to the Supreme Court. “The scale of this painting speaks to the grand accomplishments made by these four women and the example they set for future generations,” museum director Kim Sajet said of the portrait. “I imagine this portrait will spark a conversation among young people, particularly young women, about breaking barriers.” Artist Nelson Shanks was commissioned by collectors Ian and Annette Cumming to paint the portrait. According to the Smithsonian, the painting is on loan to the museum for three years. 320 Fans Become a fan 6 minutes ago ( 3:36 PM) May be we will stike a balance on the court at least on women issues. Men will be boys, but the girls will be women when they grow up. Look at Congress where men are still little boys, but lets hope the Supreme Court will be a little more mature and even on at least gender issues. Justice Ginsburg is such an inspiration. Survived colon and pancreatic cancers (who DOES that?), 80 years old, goes to the gym and can do 20 plank-style push-ups at a time. Awesome. Make a switch in their positions? Serious question, is there precedent? It is a lifetime appointment. This is why Bush chose not to appoint Scalia (too old.) Thomas appears invisible, which is good because Scalias ego takes up most of the picture. Their corrupt practices are well documented. Scalia too. Thomas is the worst. Im glad we are making progress. That being said, why do they have to share a picture instead of have one of their own, and why have only FOUR women been on the SC in over 200 years???? It truly helps explain why we are in the state we are in as a society. When ONLY men are in charge, we all get s*rewed, and NOT in a good way! I know one of them runs away from matters pertaining to racism of white Americans. She also promotes affirmative action, a racist law to choke the future, livelihood and careers of caucasians, in most part, males. This court at one time had the attention and respect of the American public and now all it generates is head shaking in disbelief and brow wiping for all its uselessness. They may as well call it Order of the Dysfunction.................... You ladies go shopping for a while until were through. ???? Youd think supreme court justices would be smarter than this painting, but then again look at who 3 of them are?
