The Woods World Cup Countdown 24th : Japan This is a fifth consecutive World Cup for Japan, but they are yet to progress beyond the round of 16. Last time out in South Africa, they were beaten on penalties in the R16 by Paraguay after progressing through a relatively soft group. The Samurai Blues sauntered through AFC qualifying, but given the confederations status as the weakest in world football, that is hardly an achievement. In a group Colombia, Ivory Coast and Greece, Japan will simply be overmatched in all three games and I expect the best they could hope for would be a tie against either Ivory Coast or Greece, though the prospect seems unlikely. Player to watch: Shinji Kagawa. Known to most watchers of the Premier League, Kagawa has so far failed to nail down a spot in an overcrowded Manchester United attack. Despite this, Kagawa certainly has the ability and tenacity to unlock a defence and win a game.
