Last time out in South Africa, they were beaten on penalties in the R16 by Paraguay after progressing through a relatively soft group. The Samurai Blues sauntered through AFC qualifying, but given the confederations status as the weakest in world football, that is hardly an achievement. In a group Colombia, Ivory Coast and Greece, Japan will simply be overmatched in all three games and I expect the best they could hope for would be a tie against either Ivory Coast or Greece, though the prospect seems unlikely. Player to watch: Shinji Kagawa. Known to most watchers of the Premier League, Kagawa has so far failed to nail down a spot in an overcrowded Manchester United attack. Despite this, Kagawa certainly has the ability and tenacity to unlock a defence and win a game.
