The Word and the Image Its amazing how photos touch us, especially photos of lovely things, and spiritual things. We see it all over Facebook, every hour of every day. Has the image replaced the word in its power to move us? Christ left us no certain image of Himself. And yet His words, both discursive and in parable, and the words of the apostles and disciples, evoke images which artists have never failed to attempt to translate for us. And we are glad for it. Still the question remains, especially in this hyper-technological postmodern age: has the word been eclipsed by images and streaming video? It is a problem because unlike in the past these flood us. What does it mean for reflection, for thought and passing on our thoughts, for understanding? We are also overwhelmed by words today. Some say we read more than ever. But do we read as well as we used to? The temptation is to flit from one breaking story to another, almost endlessly, with precious little time for serious reflection on the meaning and implications of what we read. In our Lords time there were far fewer words and much illiteracy. Yet the word was heard, committed to memory often, and truly pondered. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God...and the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us, full of grace and truth --- John 1:1, 14
