The Work: September 2014 Poets and poetry lovers: Join me for The Work, my monthly workshop at Niche, which begins again Saturday, September 13 at noon. We will listen to spoken word recordings, read and discuss poetry, and write four or five new poems together. Niche Wine and Art Bar is located at 1013 Main Street, right next door to the historic Kiggins Theatre. $20 suggested donation; no one will be turned away for lack of funds. This year’s 100 Thousand Poets for Change reading on September 27 will feature local authors from the recently published World of change anthology as well as a celebration of William Stafford’s Centenary with George Thomas. See item 6 below for details. Congratulations to my life partner, fiancée, and co-host Toni Partington for taking home the first prize in Auburn Days Contest. Toni will also be a featured reader at Barnes and Noble Vancouver this month when they showcase photographer Ray Klein’s gorgeous art book Visions of Light, which includes poems by Toni, Lori Loranger, and others. See item 7 for more details. Summer is gone, although we may be fortunate enough to enjoy a few more sunny, warm days before the long winter of the PNW sets in. I had so much going on that the summer seemed to go fast for me. I really enjoyed reading at CouvFest. Thanks to Andy Harmsen, Mo Duncan, and the rest of the bands and volunteers for a great festival. Highlights included smoking sets from Tony Smiley and Atlas and the Astronaut, and the mindblowing multimedia spectacular that is Brizbomb. I also really enjoyed watching Kumoricon cosplayers boogie to Lincoln’s Beard. I am very grateful to Stu Jackson, Quetzel Herzig, and Brendan for the solid, funky sounds they laid down to support my words. If you missed it, check out this link to Tiffany Burba-Schramm’s video of the set. The Reading at Tony’s Hosted by Tommy Gaffney 8:30pm Monday, September 8 Tony’s Tavern 1955 W Burnside St, Portland, Oregon 97209 Im bursting with fruit flavor over the September edition of The Reading at Tonys. Our feature is none other than Nathan Tompkins. Nathan Tompkins was forced upon this unsuspecting world in a small town hospital in North Idaho. Nine days later, and in response to this dire threat, the Kootenai Tribe declared war upon the United States. While their aims in destroying the antichrist were unsuccessful, they were given many important concessions, so he survived, to spread his misdeeds all over the west coast. In order to keep his mischievous imagination occupied, his mother taught him to read, and gave to him a love of the written word, including poetry. By age nine, she had introduced him to Noyes, Poe, Frost, Coleridge, Dickinson, and many others. In his freshman year of high school, he began writing poetry...from then on he was screwed, and the world saved. His poems and photographs have been/or will be published in two anthologies, Ghost Town Anthology II and Keeping It Weird, as well as several magazines, including, but not limited to, Alchemy, NonBinary Review, and Angle. He is also the author of two chapbooks: Junk Mail of the Heart and The Dog Stops Here. Bring your words. Bring your friends words. Bring your livers. Bring your friends livers. 3. Here’s a description: CRAFTY: WILLIAM STAFFORD AND THE ART OF ARTLESSNESS Was William Stafford “crafty?” Was he “skilled in underhandedness, deviousness, or deception?” Yes, but only in the sense that he was able to make his art seem artless. Join Paulann Petersen, Oregon Poet Laureate Emerita, in an interactive exploration of a few aspects of William Stafford’s art. We’ll look at a number of Stafford poems and discuss them in terms of the craft that might have gone into their making. We’ll be alert to the ways in which we might apply such craft to our own work, ways we might become “craftier” too. 4. From Tom Hogan: The Milwaukie Poetry Series The Eighth Season! The Pond House in Milwaukie 2215 SE Harrison Adjacent to the Ledding Library Second Wednesday of each month beginning Sept. 10, 2014 at 7 p.m. The Milwaukie Poetry Series Committee and the Ledding Library of Milwaukie are delighted to announce the Eighth Season of the Milwaukie Poetry Series! This exciting series of readings by established local poets will take place on the second Wednesday of each month at 7 p.m. in the Pond House adjacent to the Milwaukie Ledding Library, 2215 SE Harrison, Milwaukie, OR, 97222. We felt that the time was right to do something a little different this year. Thus half of the readers this year will be poets who have read in the Series previously and have recent books out. The other half will be ones new to the Series. In addition we wanted to commemorate the William Stafford Centennial as we could. Paulann Petersen and Kim Stafford were our first two readers in 2007. Thus the Eighth Season will begin with a reading by Paulann Petersen on Wednesday, Sept. 10 and continue through June, 2014. Other readers in this season are: other readers are Henry Carlile, David Filer, Kim Stafford, David Biespiel, Samiya Bashir, Lex Runciman, Harold Johnson, Lisa Steinman and Annie Lighthart. The Pond House in Milwaukie is a delightful setting and easy to reach. It is located on SE 22nd and Harrison in Milwaukie. The Pond House is one block east of the library. This is an outstanding line up of local poets sharing their work and we are honored by their participation. We want to thank the City of Milwaukie for its support and all the volunteers that make it possibile. A flier of the readings is attached which you can print and post. We would encourage everyone to forward this to anyone that you feel might have an interest in the Series. If your printer doesnt print color and you would like some mailed, please let Tom Hogan know and they will be sent. For information or questions about the readings or to join the group list, please contact the Series Coordinator Tom Hogan at (503) 819-8367 or [email protected]. Please join us for these exciting readings! 5. From Joyce Colson: Tiger Prowl Issue #17 When hunger drives, the tiger prowls, When satiated the tiger howls. Clark County Poet Laureate Christopher Luna Printed Matter Vancouver and Angst Gallery Present 100 Thousand Poets for Change William Stafford Centenary Reading Featuring George Thomas and local authors from the anthology World of Change Eileen Elliott, Christopher Luna, and Toni Partington Plus open mic 7pm Saturday, September 27, 2014 Angst Gallery 1015 Main Street Vancouver, WA 98660 2014 is William Stafford’s Centenary year. Around the Pacific Northwest, readings have been held in his honor. Because Stafford was a conscientious objector, interned in Arkansas and California during World War II, who wrote and spoke passionately for peace and social justice, this year-long celebration is a perfect way to contribute to 100 Thousand Poets for Change, the global movement founded by poets Michael Rothenberg and Terri Carrion of Guerneville, CA. World of Change, edited by David Madgalene and published by New Way Media, is a 100TPC-inspired anthology that includes poets from around the world as well as local authors Eileen Elliott, Christopher Luna, and Toni Partington. William Stafford’s writing will also be honored by Vancouver poet George Thomas. Community members who would like to read one of William Stafford’s poems, or a poem of their own concerning progressive social change, are invited to participate in an open mic. Eileen Davis Elliott writes her poetry and prose in Vancouver, WA. She is the author of two books of poetry: Prodigal Cowgirl and Miles of Pies. Her work reflects long-held interests in multicultural themes about conflict and tolerance, appreciation and bewilderment. Humankind continues to fascinate and challenge her attempts to represent situations and solutions in written and visual forms. She thinks she asks more questions than she can ever answer. Clark County Poet Laureate Christopher Luna is the co-founder, with Toni Partington, of Printed Matter Vancouver, an editing service and small press that serves Northwest writers. Together Luna and Partington edited Ghost Town Poetry volumes one and two, featuring poems from the popular open mic poetry reading series that Luna established in 2004. Luna’s books include Brutal Glints of Moonlight, GHOST TOWN, USA and The Flame Is Ours: The Letters of Stan Brakhage and Michael McClure 1961-1978. Recent publications include Bombay Gin, Unshod Quills, It’s Animal But Merciful, gape-seed, Take Out, Chiron Review, and Soundings Review. Toni Partington lives and works as a poet, editor, visual artist, and writing coach in Vancouver, Washington. She is the author of two books of poetry: Jesus Is A Gas and Wind Wing. Her poetry has been published in numerous journals including The Cascade Journal, VoiceCatcher (editions 3 and 4), and Perceptions. She was Co-Editor for the 2011/2012 VoiceCatcher anthology of Pacific Northwest women writers. Toni is co-founder and editor of Printed Matter Vancouver, an editing and small press imprint. George Thomas earned an MFA at Eastern Washington University. He has founded and edited two magazines and a microzine. One of those is Easterns Willow Springs. His books include Tenderfoot and Gray House by Cold Mountain. His work has appeared in publications in England and the U.S., most recently in Ghost Town Poetry Volume Two. nichewinebar/ williamstafford.org/ 100tpc.org/ printedmattervancouver 7. The book will be available at the store on the night. As usual, there will be open mic slots that can be claimed on the night. If you want to do one, please rehearse a 2-3 minute presentation.
