The World As A Musical: Sure. The world might well be a much nicer place if it was a musical. Id love to see how the local green-grocer stays angry with his wife while singing and dancing with a mop and bucket and with a dozen local dance school kids shuffling in the shape of a V behind his sorry ass. But I imagine such a world would also come with certain draw-backs. For one thing, you would never know when a ninety-two-year-old Carol Channing was about to pop out of a cake. That would freak me out, twenty-four seven, fifty-two twelve. And you got to know there would be some all-sparkling, brylcream-swathed, walking grin of a guy tap dancing over all your lines, over your meaningful pauses, over your determined stares into the middle distance. The old testament would come into its own again, for sure. Its popularity would ebb and wane like that of the yo-yo, hula-hoop and other hyphenated recreational art forms. Robin Williams would reprise some long forgotten role. Disney would do an animated series starring the voices of, among others, Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton and Mickey Rourke. Mickey, of course, would make himself unavailable for the promotional junkets. Tap dance shoe sales would soar in this new world of the musical. Singing classes would mushroom every place. No work would ever get done and humanity just might save itself from itself.
