The World Famous Hinchinbrook Island is approx. 5 km’s out from Cardwell and is Australia’s largest Island National Park. The World Heritage listed Great Barrier Reef is easy to access from Cardwell as Port Hinchinbrook has an excellent Marina for Boat Launching. Wild life lovers will enjoy both the sea birds and native birds, salt water crocodiles (Beware!), Cassowaries, reptiles and other wild life as well as witnessing plentiful Marine Life. Dugongs, fish, turtles, sharks and others. Cardwell has a selection of accommodation to choose from including Motels, Hotels and Caravan Parks with Camping Facilities. Have dinner at the local pub or book ahead for an awesome meal at the Cardwell RSL. The Golf Club is also now serving meals and the town consists of a few take-aways and eateries. Cardwell provides all the basic facilities needed to make your stay enjoyable. Besides Accommodation, Wining and Dining, Cardwell has a number of shops to cater your daily needs. Spectacular Sunrises and Sunsets are a MUST SEE whilst in Cardwell. Beautiful red sunsets reflect both the sky and the water whilst the morning sky glows red just before the sunrises over the water. Make sure you have your camera! Historic Cardwell by the Sea can boast to being the first Settlement North of Bowen in 1864. The Battle of the Coral Sea was fought off the Cardwell Coast in 1942 and Cardwell remembers this day with a Memorial Service each year and a park dedicated to the battle. Cyclone Yasi noted as the most powerful cyclone to hit the Queensland coast since the beginning of records ripped through Cardwell and her Neighbouring towns in the wee hours of Feb 3rd, 2011. Cardwell awoke that morning to devastation never experienced before. The Category 5 Cyclone brought with it a massive storm tide and Cardwell, with the assistance of her committed residents, restored herself to the unique town she was before Yasi. Mud crabs, Barramundi, Reef fish anyone? Catch your own, go on a local charter or purchase fresh seafood locally. Cardwell by the Sea - the town with an abundant supply of Seafood and Fish. Oh, by the way, you can fish off the Jetty or the beach, you don’t need to have a boat, if fishing off the beach beware of the crocodiles!
