The XYZ Show team was shocked by the events of yesterday and we stand with the team at Charlie Hedbo. By Marie Lora-Mungai: For my non-French friends out there, it might be difficult to grasp how iconic Charlie Hebdo and its journalists were, are and will continue to be. More than journalists, Cabu, Wolinski and their colleagues were thought leaders and cultural trendsetters, sparking many school yard conversations when my generation was growing up (Have you seen the cover of LHebdo this morning?? -- Yes, I grew up in a very liberal, politically aware environment). They went further than anyone else in the pursuit of freedom of expression and inspired many with their boldness. I ended up becoming a journalist first, and then building a career centered on the power of political and social satire with Godfrey Mwampembwa (Kenyas Cabu) and our shows The XYZ Show and Ogas At The Top and our company Buni Media. Im often asked how difficult it is to do our work in developing democracies like Kenya and Nigeria and Im always happy to say that so far we have been able to operate freely (except for the occasional lawsuit threat). I could have never imagined that being a cartoonist in France, the land of the Liberte dexpression, could lead to such a tragic ending.
