The Yazidi religion is an offshoot of Zoroastrianism, and Isil calls Yazidis devil-worshippers. They speak Kurdish, and were under the protection of 16,000 Kurdish troops, who fled in the face of a jihadist force of just 1,000. Many Yazidis expressed fury at what had happened. No attempt has been made to retake the territory, despite a handful of US air strikes, and a small force of Yazidi volunteers is protecting the remaining villages from attack.
