The Year In Review- Continued Well, if I am possibly going to do - TopicsExpress

The Year In Review- Continued Well, if I am possibly going to do a decent review of this years wild horses, I am simply going to *have* to give you more than one photo per day. Sigh. The next wild horses we saw were nearly six weeks after the Cerbat horses. And they were horses we never expected to see. Thank you to our friend Sue, who sent us the information. After some research and lots of phone calls, we decided to go out of our way to see the Louisiana horses. And we are sure glad we did! According to the US Forest Service, who manages the horses, this little known herd (even for people who live in Louisiana!) goes back to the mid to late 1930s, when the US government was buying up land for army bases. Farmers and ranchers who sold out had no means to transport their animals and so they opened the gates and let them out (they did the same thing with pigs and we know what happened with that!). Add a few escapees from local farms and probably some horses that have been released by people who couldnt take care of them, and you suddenly have a herd. They have been quite successful, with plenty of water and forage in this forested area. Truthfully, the Forest Service is much more interested and invested in managing habitat for the endangered Red-cockaded Woodpecker (we went out with a worker to see these woodpeckers too). Most of their resources go there, but that doesnt mean the horses and other wildlife dont benefit. To provide the type of habitat the woodpeckers need to thrive, the USFS does prescribed burns, rotating areas each year. These burned areas become rich sources of grass for the horses and other animals. That burned forest also became a rich source of photos for us. Both Marty and I got favorite photos there, though those photos were very different from each other. I wonder if you can tell whose is whose. LOL Regardless, these became favorites for the year. It appears you guys like them too, based on this years sale of mugs, canvases, calendars and prints. ;-) Speaking of which, this weekend is your last opportunity for an *autographed* calendar (six to choose from) OR to combine a calendar and mugs for free shipping. I just realized I cant order calendars until Monday anyway, so my new deadline is Sunday night 9:00 pm PST. Calendars are on sale the rest of the season. More details are on yesterdays post. store.barbarawheelerphotography. Questions? [email protected].
