The Year of Ancient Ancestors Festival has come to an end and what a year we’ve had. Visitor numbers went through the roof with 9000 visitors in July alone and we couldn’t be happier. We’d like to thank the many groups and organisations that helped make the festival happen and of course the local traders in Thurso who supported our festival and got into the swing of the events throughout the year. The Year of Ancient Ancestors Festival was made possible by generous funding from the following bodies: Homecoming Scotland 2014, The Robertson Trust, EventScotland, The Highland Council, Museums Galleries Scotland and The Caithness and North Sutherland Fund. The festival performers which you’ll find in the aptly named ‘festival performers’ section of the website were simply brilliant, we thoroughly enjoyed having them here and look forward to working with them again in future projects. We’d also like to thank everyone who volunteered in any way over the year; your help is, as always incredible gratefully received. As a small team we’re always on the lookout for a helping hand! Of course the festival would not have been nearly as successful if it wasn’t for our lovely customers who joined us over the year to celebrate. We welcomed visitors from all over the world including from Denmark, Iceland Singapore, Australia and the USA and were equally delighted to see friendly, local faces appearing at each event. The festival oozed an exciting atmosphere which helped us to engage with people of all ages and interests. The Year of Ancient Ancestors Festival may be over but our Museum is open all year round with our collection on the Picts and Vikings as well as Robert Dick and Dounreay.
