The York-Poquoson Sheriffs Office investigates hundreds of cases a year involving scams and fraud. In many instances the victim is out hundreds, if not thousands of dollars. The number 1. way to avoid being a victim of a scam is to use common sense, and trust your first judgement! A few scams which target the elderly try to illicit an immediate reaction, and an immediate payment. These scams typically involve someone saying they are from an out of country law enforcement agency and that their grandchild has been arrested. They will then ask the family member to send bail money via wire transfer or prepaid debit cards. If this happens to you, DO NOT SEND MONEY! There is always time to contact your local law enforcement agency and speak to them about it. It has been my findings that 10/10 calls involving this type of incidents are scams. Playing foreign lotteries is against the law. You didnt play the Canadian Lottery, so why would you have won the Canadian Lottery. Dont fall for it ! Newer scams are targeting businesses, and the caller claims to be from Dominion Power. They state that the person is behind on their bill, and they need immediate payment with a prepaid credit card. It is a SCAM! Virginia Dominion Power will never call you and ask for payment via prepaid debit card. Craigslist scams are out there! No one in California is going to buy your $100 couch and asked for it to be shipped to California for $5,000... not gonna happen! NEVER send money via wire transfer to someone youve never met for an item youve NEVER seen! NEVER EVER EVER EVER deposit a check for more then your owed, simply to send them the over payment back via wire transfer! Remember....IF IT SOUNDS TO GOOD TO BE TRUE, THEN IT IS TO GOOD TO BE TRUE!!!
