The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) should rethink its ruthless and catastrophic strategy of smashing vehicles’ windscreens. They should seriously consider or devise other strategies, tactics and innovative ways of apprehending traffic offenders. Smashing a windscreen of a moving vehicle carrying members of the public is a clear demonstration of unwarranted excessive use of force on unsuspecting members of the public often including women and children. The police should be protecting members of the public from unscrupulous transport operators. Their war against kombis should not result in the unnecessary loss of lives or fuel accidents in any way, but rather it should be done in the confines of the law. Their reckless and ill-advised way of apprehending traffic offenders is uncalled for. That really leaves one wondering if their superiors encourage them to do so or rather instruct them to smash car windscreens putting the lives of innocent people at risk. Why not, for instance, simply take their vehicle registration numbers and deal with them as prescribed by the law. I feel the police should demonstrate their competencies through skilful, maneouvering tactics in apprehending criminals. Above all, smashing car windscreens might just be the smokescreen to create a situation to facilitate bribery. Corruption is rampant because such things are simply allowed to prevail in broad daylight without restraint. The ZRP should be considerate and value human lives through devising a water-tight plan to deal with errant kombi drivers with the cooperation of members of the public not sacrificing them in order to facilitate corruption.
