The abandoned skin of a five-foot long Gaboon Viper--which is - TopicsExpress

The abandoned skin of a five-foot long Gaboon Viper--which is indigenous to east Africa--was found at the Harbor Point Apartments complex in Mt. Pleasant, SC--about a mile from our jungle-like back yard. No one knows how it got there. No one seems to be looking for it. A resident says he thinks he might have seen the actual snake sometime but isnt sure. The venom antidotes stored at local hospitals are not effective against the Gaboon but an enterprising local critical care center has arranged to fly the right vaccine in from Columbia should it be needed. Im assuming, but I dont know, that the Columbia theyre talking about is in SC, not SA. I am not completely reassured by this news. As a man who has lived mainly in New York City for the past 50 years, where bridge closings kill political careers and state legislators regularly threaten to throw local reporters off balconies, I am struck again and again by the passivity of the small town press and politicians. Got a deadly snake wandering around your house? Must be Gods will. The main bridge that links Mt. Pleasant to Charleston is closed for two days longer than necessary without any real explanation? Shit happens. Apparently, the State Transportation Agency in Columbia has an unlisted number and the local press doesnt know it. Public officals stay carefully hidden during local emergencies (which granted, is not always a terrible thing). As a result, I know the name of every personal injury lawyer within 50 miles because they saturate the airways with promises to get me every dime Im owed should I unfortunately be runover by a little old lady in a Mercedes. But I have idea who the Mayor of Charleston is or if Mt. Pleasant has one. Ive never seen them--live or on TV. Anyway, Happy Easter, yall. Watch out for the snakes.
