"The advantages of vertical farming are many, from urban renewal to year-round crop production without the harmful side effects of traditional farming, such as agricultural run-off, which — due to pesticides and herbicides — is extremely environmentally destructive. Last year, the media proclaimed the world’s first “true” vertical farm open. In Singapore, 120 10-meter-high (30 feet) towers owned by Sky Greens Farms produce 1 ton of fresh vegetables every other day. These towers eliminate some of the need for the country to constantly import fruit and vegetables. For the most part, however, the vertical farm movement is seeing fruit and vegetables being grown not in skyscrapers, but in other large-scale buildings, such as abandoned warehouses. This is certainly the case in Chicago, where the largest indoor vertical farm in the United States has been opened. FarmedHere occupies 27,500 square meters (90,000 square feet) and aims to produce more than 45,000 kilograms (about 1 million pounds) of chemical-free greens to the local area once production is fully under way.
