The ageing hippie rolled over and sneezed out the lights ~Ned Earley circa 2012 A few years ago, I was scrounging around in the back of some cabinets, where no man had gone before for decades. I unearthed a novelty item called The Clapper!(TM). They were quite popular in the 70s, along with leisure suits and big hair and serial killers. You would plug this space-alien-contraption-reverse-engineered by earthlings, into an electrical outlet, and then clap your hands and whatever you had on that circuit, usually lights, would go out. And then, with more clapping they would go back on. Curious if it would still work after decades of dust and global warming and disco and Threes Company, I plugged it in to an outlet in my bedroom. It works! I played around with it for a few days, loudly and feverishly clapping my hands like a Ted Nugent fan at a gun show. I then connected it to my bedroom lamp. I do almost all of my reading in bed, and I thought that would be an effortless way to turn out the lights. I was reading that night when I felt some godawful powerful sneeze a coming on. I rolled over in bed and sneezed. The lights went out. Its dark. I clapped the lights back on because I could not work up another sneeze to light up my room again. I got out a pen and some paper and wrote: The ageing hippie rolled over and sneezed out the lights. It is the best line I have ever wrote.
