The amazing amount of craftsmanship that goes into making pointe shoes! Pointe shoes are specially-made shoes worn by ballerinas to allow them to dance on the tips of their toes. They create an illusion of lightness and give a sense that the ballerina is floating on air. Italian ballerina Maria Taglioni is considered the first ballerina to dance on pointe in the early 1830s, however, the method likely began earlier. The birth of the modern pointe shoe is attributed to the early 20th-century Russian ballerina Anna Pavlova who inserted toughened leather soles into her shoes for extra support and flattened and hardened the toe area to form a box.
