The annual Edwin Jackson Baseball Clinic returns to the Youth - TopicsExpress

The annual Edwin Jackson Baseball Clinic returns to the Youth Sports Complex on main Post from 1-4pm Nov. 16. This is a free event for the whole family. Children 6 to 13 will get the opportunity to play ball with Edwin Jackson and a number of major league all-stars, some retired, some active. This free event, sponsored by MWR’s Child, Youth and School Services and the 2nd Battalion, 19th Infantry Regiment, is open to military families with children between 6 and 15 years old. Children are encouraged to wear appropriate shoes and bring a baseball glove to participate. Edwin Jackson is one of 27 major league ball players who were born in Germany, where their fathers were assigned with the military. He grew up in Columbus, Ga., after his father was assigned to Fort Benning. In 2001, he helped lead the Shaw High School Raiders to a GHSA AAAA State Championship. Jackson started his career in 2001 with the Dodgers, who converted him from an outfielder to a pitcher, and made his major league debut in September, 2003, on his 20th birthday. Since then, Jackson has played for Tamp Bay, Detroit, Arizona, Chicago and St. Louis Cardinals. He was playing with the Cardinals when they won the 2011 World Series. Today he pitches for the Chicago Cubs. He returns each fall to Fort Benning to visit trainees on Sand Hill and spend an afternoon with military families in a round-robin style mini-clinic led by various baseball major leaguers, past and present, including Justin and BJ Upton, Glen Davis, Willie Horton and Jake Wood.
