The answer to TRIVIA TUESDAYS question If your pet is prescribed - TopicsExpress

The answer to TRIVIA TUESDAYS question If your pet is prescribed an antibiotic for 10 days, is it ok to stop giving it early if his/her symptoms have cleared? is: B. No It can be very common for a pet to start feeling better after receiving the first couple of doses, but you should NOT stop giving it earlier than prescribed. You may see improvement in your pets symptoms because the antibiotic has killed some of the bacteria, BUT, there is still more bacteria remaining. If you stop giving the antibiotic early, the symptoms can return. Thats not the only problem - that remaining bacteria can become resistant to that antibiotic by changing in a way where they can survive (and multiply) against that antibiotic. If that happens, you may need to change to a higher level antibiotic, which in most cases is also more expensive! Resistance can also occur if multiple doses are missed. According to the CDC, Its not the body that becomes resistant to a certain drug, its the bacteria that becomes resistant. Please be sure to give the antibiotic as directed and finish the full course to avoid resistance. This also includes antibiotic ointments/liquids you apply in your pets ears.
