The answer to TRIVIA TUESDAYS question Why is it important to have a fecal (stool sample) test done on your pet at least once a year? is: It is important to run a fecal test on your pets stool sample to identify the presence of intestinal parasites. Sometimes pet owners can actually see worms in their pets stool (scary, I know), but most of the parasites cannot be seen with the naked eye. The stool sample is examined under a microscope. There are many types of intestinal parasites that can cause health problems in your pets. Some symptoms include diarrhea, vomiting, scooting, and weight loss. Even if your pet is not showing any visible symptoms, it is highly recommended by the CDC to run this test yearly. These intestinal parasites can be passed on to humans and children are at an increased risk. For example, there have been thousands of cases of Roundworm infection in humans reported in the United States. Larvae migrating through the body can affect a variety of organs, including the eyes which can cause blindness. If intestinal parasites are detected in the sample, your veterinarian will prescribe medication for your pet. Its best to catch this early!!
