The answer to our #MysteryMonday photo: the red boathouse at the Sleeping Bear Point Coast Guard Station! Now serving in the not-so-glamorous capacity as a public restroom for the Maritime Museum, this building once had a much more exciting task-housing the lifeboats and surfboats used by the courageous men of the United States Coast Guard to rescue mariners in distress. The building began its life on a dock over Lake Michigan, then moved to the beach, and finally traveled with the rest of the station in 1931 when it was relocated from Sleeping Bear point to its current location. During its lifetime, it sheltered a 34 foot self-bailing, self-righting, motorized boat, a 1912 motor surfboat, and even the station’s truck.
