The answer to our #WhatIsItWednesday challenge is ... 1938 Mercedes 540K Sport Tourer! During WWII, the owner of this very rare automobile, in an effort to protect it from the ravages of war and conceal it from the Americans and Soviets, stowed it away in the basement garage of his Dresden, Germany home. He then bricked up the entrance and filled the driveway with topsoil, planting a rose garden above it. With the fall of the Nazi regime and the end of WWII, Germany was divided by the Allies with Dresden becoming part of Soviet controlled East Germany. This now one of a kind car remained hidden for nearly 60 years and was retrieved only after the fall of the Berlin Wall. Its award winning restoration was completed in 2005 and it is now proudly on display at the Gilmore Car Museum.
