The answer to our trivia question was #2: Eric The Eel Moussambani completed the race in an excruciatingly long 1 minute 52 seconds, which was longer than the world record of 48 seconds for the same event, and was even outside the world record for the 200-metre freestyle. Still, the 18,000 spectators at the Sydney International Aquatic Centre didnt seem to care as they cheered for the only swimmer left in the heat. The other swimmers from Niger and Tajikistan were disqualified for having false starts. Moussambani had reportedly never seen a 50-metre long swimming pool before coming to the Olympics as a wildcard entrant from Equatorial Guinea, and slowed down noticeably in the second leg of the race after making his turn. After the event, he told reporters that the last 15 metres were the most difficult, but that he managed to complete the race thanks to the cheers from the crowd.
