The anticipation to clinch this year’s Kenyan Premier League crown is so high at Gor Mahia that fans have invented a special name which has caught the attention of world’s most popular search engine Wikipedia. The word Giniwasekao, has been enlisted by Wikipedia who describe it as Luo for “We have taken this thing” and is a catchword popularized by Gor Mahia fans in expectancy of winning the 2013 Premier League title. Wikipedia further says that the word is an acknowledgement by fans that after an 18 year wait, Gor Mahia finally stand a good chance of winning the title thanks to a very strong performance in the first leg. It says: “Whenever two Gor Mahia fans meet, it is an acceptable greeting to call out "Giniwasekao" to the other person, and the other K’Ogalo fan will answer as if in acknowledgement, "Giniwasekao." The origins of this chant are rather obscure, but the catchword is said to have been popularized by a number of diehard Gor Mahia fans, among them Collins Tony Anelka. With the growing usage of Giniwasekao, other versions of the catchword have appeared such as: ginimarwa - this thing is ours, giniwasekano - we have taken and kept this thing, gininewakaochon - we took this thing a long time ago. Following Sofapaka’s barren draw against relegation-threatened Karuturi Sports on Sunday, Gor Mahia needs nine points from remaining matches to be crowned champions for the first time in 18 years. As it stands, Gor Mahia needs to win their next three games and they will be declared champions with two games to spare. Sofapaka now have 40 points from 25 games and they remain second. Ulinzi Stars’ chances of winning the title ended with their 2-2 draw with KCB at the Afraha Stadium.
