The appeal to complexity displaces accountability. To say that the global economy is beyond knowledge and governance seeds in advance a terrain of struggle. For Hayek the problem of the economy is the problem of knowledge. My argument is that accountability is a matter not of knowledge, but the assumption of power. Invocations of complexity induce us, the people, to think that self-governance is impossible, too hard, over our heads. Its like an excuse for avoiding responsibility, an infantile fantasy that somehow we can escape politics. Neoliberalism is entrapping us in ideology, not necessity.
