The area around Lamb and Sunset seems to be suffering a higher-than-usual accident rate over the last couple of days. Sometimes its easy to figure out why an area is dangerous. Common risks are lack of crosswalks, lack of illumination, and blind entry streets where traffic turning on to the street cant see far enough down the road. But in this situation, Its hard to know exactly what the problem is. Yesterday morning, a bicyclist was killed when he was hit by a Dodge Challenger. The cyclist was in the left travel lane and there was no indication of any unsafe behaviour. Later in the afternoon, a pedestrian was struck, though those injuries were not life-threatening. The previous day, Saturday, saw another man on a bicycle critically injured when he was struck by a car around 5:00pm. The culprit is likely to be the same as it is all over the valley: Our roads are wide. They are fast. The spacious car lanes can make people more comfortable with breaking the speed limit and less aware of how fast theyre really going. These are difficult infrastructure problems to fix, and they take time to address. In the meantime, bicyclists and pedestrians should take extra care, and everyone behind the wheel of a car needs to focus. Its a privilege to pilot a piece of metal that weighs three tons down a road, not a right. If youve been injured in a vehicle accident, we can help: (702) 382-0000.
